MBE in Space
Oil on canvas, 2021A father-daughter piece commissioned to reimagine the MBE (Molecular Beam Epitaxy) machine working in space with high efficiency solar panels that provide power supply from the sun 24/7. For now the MBE machine is used with high vacuum anyway, who knows in the future it might really work in space? Satellite with laser communication is also displayed showing that MBE technique is useful for coherent light sources. The perspective point of view is through an astronaut overlooking the Earth and other celestial objects; the galaxies, spiral nebulae, milky way, and Halley’s Comet. When looking from space, one could see amazing nature in Utah’s desert. All of which are
imaginative inspirations for my father’s work in self-assembled nanostructures. And lastly, the protagonist of this painting; a female NASA astronaut inside a spaceshift gazing at this MBE machine and the infinite space. It resembles the very person who talked my dad into this commission in the first place, Claudine. We believe this art-science crossover piece nods to the belief that nature is the best teacher of science.
